16 week old infant, symptoms of GERD,no dr will see him?
Ok,none of the pediatricians in this area will see a baby without insurance. My son is exhibiting EVERY symptom of GERD. Is there anything I can do about this on my own? We have a pending medicaid case, but no doctors in this area will even see them with a pending medicaid case. It’s a "pay up front in full or don’t be seen". Should I just start buying the formula for that, and try it out,and see if he takes to it well? I’m not sure how long my case is going to take to process, and he’s spitting up at EVERY feeding, and eating less. He’s also teething. He’s spitting up a LOT though. Any advice here? Should I buy the formula (ie enfamil AR or something) and try that out until he gets in to see a dr?
He was seen by a pediatrician TWO TIMES since he’s been born, and at that point,it wasn’t yet a problem.
Ok,so I tried the rice cereal bottle thing, and I guess more of his bottles will have to be made that way. He barely spit up any at all,and seems way more content. I started to sit him up after he eats in his swing.
We’ve been making the occasional cereal bottle for awhile now,but more of them are going to have to be made that way,or all of them.

Is he fussy when he’s spitting up? Is it projectile or just slowly coming up?
Spitting up is not always reflux, but if it is, there are a few things you can do to help:
Make sure you keep him upright for at least 30 minutes after each feeding
Try to feed him smaller, more frequent meals
Makes sure you burp him frequently
Use a wedge in his crib to keep up propped up when sleeping
Hope those help
Hi. As you already know, your baby needs all the nutrients he can get to grow properly. It is so bothersome to me that in this day and age an infant can not get the help he/ she needs and the mother is just destroyed with fear. It is a sad commentary of our time. At this point, I think your only resource would be to go to the ER. They can at least get him started on some medication to help him. As far as the bill. If you pay even $10 a month, they will work with you. Just show something in good faith. There is help for your little one until the medicaid kicks in. Just be sure to explain to the Er doctor your situation so he can prescribe enough medication to get you through for a while. I do know that often times there are over the counter medications that are used for GERD. This will be helpful for you. They are not very expensive and easily found. I hope that this has helped you in some small way and that your son feels better soon so you can rest easy. Best of luck to you.
i am not a dr or nurse by any means BUT, my daughter had GERD and the first route was the change her formula- first we went to a soy formula, and we saw no change. Then we switched to similac Alimentum, it is about twice the price of regular formula- and we still weren’t seeing an improvement, but her ped. said to continue this formula and gave her a script for Zantac. After about 2-3 weeks on Zantac we saw improvement but not a cure. He switched her back to soy as it appeared easier for her to digest soy over lactose and the expensive Alimentum did not appear to work for her.
Eventually by about 6 months (she got on Zantac at 6 weeks) and about 3 dose increases with her increasing size we continued to see more signs of GERD and they switched her medication, i can’t remember what they put her on at this point. So, this new medication worked until about 1 year, then a gastro ended up putting her on a liquid suspension of Prilosec from 1 year to 22 months when we weaned her off due to increasing symptoms.
She will be 3 in April and is a very healthy little girl!
Best of Luck to you, try the formula change and get to the dr. as soon as you can afford it or insurance goes through!
Go to a free clinic. They see people without insurance.. and you shouldve had medicaid before he was born, I dont know why you dont have it for him, normally you would have it by now.
They sent me a medicaid insurance card before he was born and instead of his name they put "baby boy" with my last name after it and after he was born I sent in his information with his name so they could change it to the right name.
Has your son ever been seen by a pediatrician?
My baby did that too and I finally switched her to Good Start in the GREEN bottle…not the orange one. It really helped. Also, you may have to pay out of pocket. If you can’t afford care, go to the hospital…they CANNOT refuse to help you. It’s against the law.
Poor baby. My bub has GERD and it is horrible for them (and horrible for mum to watch). I don’t know much about the health care system there, but a change in formula could help, but medication is also a big consideration too. My bub is on Losec in a suspension. It is in a medicine group called proton pump inhibitors and it reduces the acid in their stomach so they are not in pain from their reflux. There are also medication like Zantac too.
A lot of GERD babies (40% I read somewhere) are allergic to cow’s milk protein which is in almost all formulas. An AR formula will help to keep the food down as it is thickened and may help. Trying a soy formula may also help too although some can be allergic to both.
If I were you I would take your baby to hospital and ask for him to be treated. I am sure they would have to help you there.
Good luck!
Certainly give those formulas a try, it won’t hurt to try them. Also, keep him propped up after feedings for at least 15 minutes. Elevate the head of his crib by placing a small rolled blanket/small pillow under it. Burb often, even during feeds. Keep him upright as much as possible. Limit tummy time to about an hour or more after feedings.
Talk to your pharmacist to see if there is anything over the counter that might be helpful, you never know, (talk to a pharmacist, not a technician). You can go to a walk in clinic or ER and beg the doctor/PA/NP to write you a script for generic medication. Then you would only be out ($) for the clinic visit. Generic Zantac at Walgreens is about $30 a month. I’m sure you can shop around and find it cheaper too.
Good luck!
