I had severe heartburn with my first pregnancy and took the max dose of Tums every day. I had to start being picky about when I took them so that I hadn't used up my daily dose before it got really bad! Other than that, stay away from spicy foods and yes, drink milk and lots of water. My son is 5 months old and fine. Zantac REALLY took mine away,and helped,but I have acid reflux. I took my zantac twice daily from the time I was about 12 weeks on,and it was totally fine. My dr actually prescribed it for me so my insurance would cover it. Buy some over the counter zantac 75 or 150 after asking your dr if it's ok for you to take.
