You aren't alone -- the doctor suspected I had GERD after he did a stomach camera, but my symptoms weren't really enough to bother me, so I'm not on medication or anything. There are a lot of groups available -- try the Yahoo! groups -- here's a list.

GERD is fairly common; both my son and I have it. I use to wake at night with the chest/throat pain and burning sensation (which is usually referred to as 'heartburn'). My son takes Prilosec on a daily basis and I use it only on occaion as needed and we get good control. The Nexium is suppose to be the better of the medications for GERD but many of the insurance companies will not pay and will request that a cheaper medication be usesd (Prilosec, Zantac, etc.).

I have GERD, and I'm only 22. I never had it untill my last two months of pregnacy and then it seemed like it wouldn't go away. I tried Nexium and Prolosec (the prescription kind) these didn't help me either or sleeping upright...

My symptoms were the bad sore throat in the morning, a voice change, and bad breath in the morning too...and I actually would have acid on my tounge when I brushed it and actually had to change my tooth brush more often ... (gross I know) I don't think I had the shooting pains in the chest.. maybe you should get a second opinion..

I had to change my diet completely, more fiber (most people only get 10-15% of their daily recommened) and protien and lower the carbs.. and I wasn't getting enough water.. I stopped eating after 6pm (sometimes!! I can't help it :D) chewing gum helps, and also I changed my toothpaste to the kind that helps your saliva produce more thicker to help digest foods. after this total diet change It took a few days to see any results and now it seems that I am doing better...

I stopped drinking as much milk as I was and switched to calcium suppliments, and avoiding chocolate toward the end of the day(this is ment to make GERD horrible because it relaxes the throat muscles, and I thought it was making me feel better because of this.. I didn't know I was doing more harm than good)

I'm not sure what your doctor has told you to do, it is probably best to speak with him or her before any drastic change in your diet, I'm no doctor, but I did these changes after lots of research on gerd and speaking with two different doctors... But what works for me may not work for you..

Good Luck..
