I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!
Three part answer: information, what not to do, and what to do!
INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case with hereditary), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, Stress, Anxiety or can be Hereditary
The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.
G.E.R.D. is caused by too much acid being created in your stomach. This can lead to or cause ulcers, esophagus damage, heartburn and/or damage in the mouth. . Other symptoms that can be found in a few cases are dizziness, tingling in limbs, numbness of Limbs, Chest/Back pain focused on the left side (in most cases), and shortness/difficulty breathing.
WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:
Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Tomato Based Products
Lactose
Roughage (Berries and Nuts)
Onions
WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.
I would also look to putting Cinnamon and Ginger in you diet, they have been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.
Cut out caffeine, and acidic foods. Eat smaller, more frequent meals. These are just some things you can do.
Eat some peanut butter. It takes care of heartburn.
It is a good idea to cut out caffeine and any foods that consistently bother you. Try 5 ounces of vinegar every day, that is a very reliable treatment. However, if that gets to nasty for you, there is a supplement that has the same active ingredients.

(EDIT: READ THE ADDENDUM BELOW AS WELL)
Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) is cheap and the remedy is an easy to prepare part of a gout diet. Use half a teaspoon filled to the top of the spoon’s ridge, not above, (you don’t want a “mountain” of it in the spoon) with six fluid ounces of water. Make sure it dissolves completely in the water. Take, normally, four times a day, which includes one dose before bedtime. The body is said to be more acidic at night and is it just a coincidence that many gout attacks happen after midnight and before daylight?
OTHER ALKALIZING AGENTS
Baking soda in water is not the only alkalizing agent. Other alkalizing products you can take as part of your gout diet are:
Herbal tinctures contain those herbs which remove acids. The best for gout sufferers are tinctures which have an alcohol free base because you should avoid alcohol as much as possible.
Dietary supplements There are supplements which neutralise the acid in foods and beverages before you eat or drink them. Others restrict acid build up in the body.
Alkaline water drops You can also drink alkaline water. To make alkaline water you put two drops of an alkaline concentrate into a glass of plain water, and it’s changed to alkaline water. Five glasses of alkaline water are recommended daily. Gout diets usually say you need at least eight glasses of water daily. Alkaline water enables you to drink less water
Water ionizers You can make alkaline water at home with a water ionizer which makes them a natural home remedy for gout. Alkaline (ionized) water is water with excess oxygen in the form of OH-, not O2. It’s described as being lively and much tastier than regular water. The best water ionizers adjust for the overall quality of water supply input. By so doing, they produce a correct pH level, irrespective of water supply quality, water pressure and flow rate.
Personally, I would ask a doctor before trying any alternative cure.
EDIT: ADDENDUM:
Having read the information provided by others I looked into apple vinegar/baking soda a bit more and came up with this amazing link:

The whole ‘too much acid’ spiel is misinformation. Your stomach is meant to produce and deal with large amounts of acid, otherwise how would you start the break down process of proteins and fats for your small intestine to finish? The real issue is usually a bugger of a bacteria called helicobacter pylori. This bacteria works it’s way into the folds of your stomach and just slowly eats away at the lining causing gastritis (the swelling and irritation of the stomach) and eventually ulcers.
The acid reflux you experience is most likely caused by a weakened cardiac sphincter. When the stomach is not producing enough acid, your stomach has to churn longer and harder to break down the food, this in turn causes the food to work it’s way against the sphincter, and into the esophagus. This is where people think, but I feel the burn and so it must be too much acid….ahh but if there were enough, enough is the key word, your stomach wouldn’t work so hard.
In my experience, the apple cider vinegar does work to help digestion of foods. However look into mastic gum, taken in the morning on an empty stomach for help with the H. pylori, I noticed a huge difference in a week’s time. Also consider cutting back on the meat protein for a few weeks, just to give the stomach and liver a break.
You might try digestive enzymes .. and also get some candied ginger to suck on .. it is good for heartburn..and upset stomach.. But if you take th eenzyems.. I think alot of your problems will go away.. It helped mine.. I never have heartburn anymore.. Those heartburn meds are kind of bad for you unless you are sure it is to much acid.. As the person before explained.. most people have to little acid, not to much.. Someimes some Lemon and honey water helps also…
