yes GERD can cause laryngitis, I am not sure it would heal damages to your vocal cords but if you have GERD that bad you probably have sores in your throat which Nexium and Protonix can heal.
Yes the reflux can cause lots of irritation, and yes, Nexium does help to repair the lining of your esophagus. Although it won’t completely get rid of major ulcers, it does help symptoms tremendously.
GERD can cause erosive esophagitis, which includes laryngitis (inflammation of the "voice box" resulting in hoarseness). This erosive esophagitis can then lead to Barrett’s Esophagus, which involves precancerous changes in the cells of the esopaghus. This can then lead to esophageal cancer. You don’t have to have pain or "heartburn" for this to be happening.
Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor. PPI’s block the secretion of gastric acid. Therefore there is little or no gastric acid to back up into your esophagus. Since the mechanism of GERD is that your esophageal sphincter doesn’t close properly, PPI’s don’t "cure" GERD but they keep it from becoming deadly by allowing your esophagus to heal itself.
Be aware that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is investigating a possible link between PPI’s and increased risk of heart attacks. The latest information shows no probable link (http://www.webmd.com/news/20070809/nexium-prilosec-no-heart-risks-seen?src=rss_psychtoday), but the investigation continues.
I have taken Nexium. I have also taken AcipHex and Protonix, two other PPIs. They all seemed to work equally well.
If you are considering a PPI and have a history of cardiac problems, discuss this with your physician.
