Can water cause heartburn?

My mother-in-law claims that when she drinks water – even just a half glass – that she gets heartburn. She says this occurs regardless of whether the water is from the tap or is bottled. I have never heard of water causing heartburn. Has anybody else? I think it’s just her ingesting air while she drinks the water and I told her to try a straw.

In most cases water will actually decrease heartburn. The only way it could cause a problem is if they have a VERY full stomach and a serious reflux problem. Even then it should not happen except in a very rare case. A super full stomach can cause reflux in people with a history of this problem. It could be swallowing air. However, drinking from a straw will actually increase the air that is swallowed.
