Does, did your baby have GERD? If so what where their symptoms, and what helps?
I am beginning to wonder if my daughter has GERD. Heres her symptoms:
She chokes/coughs during and sometimes after feedings.
She hates laying flat, and she sometimes will spit up (so I elevate her)
She hiccups CONSTANTLY sometimes resulting in her spitting her food back up. And her hiccups make her VERY fussy.
And she swallows quite a bit. And even acts like shes chewing at times.
What do you think? I am definitely going to bring it up to the doctor and see what they say.
I don’t know are GERD and acid reflux the same thing? I just read something about GERD, but maybe but maybe its acid reflux… I don’t know shes my first.

Sounds like reflux. My daughter has had it since week 2. We have to keep her sitting at a 45 degree angle while feeding her and then 45 mins after she eats. She has projectile vomiting and you can hear it coming up. She has been on Zantac since she was 2 weeks which helps with the acid burning her throat. We elevated her crib too but she normally sleeps on my chest. After she eats at night its hard to keep her upright 45 minutes and stay awake myself. I saw you other question about the congestion. Alot of times when they spit up it goes into their lungs which will cause congestion. Just keep an eye on her when she spits up. If they are laying down is usually when it gets in their lungs. Good Luck.
Are GERD and reflux the same thing?? My son had reflux, and he had the same symptoms. He had a cough and would spit up all the time. I changed him from powdered formula to the ready made, which seemed to help him out a lot. Also, I would burp her longer than you normally would. I would pat my son on the back, he would burp, but I would do it for 20 mins. And I would get alot of burps out of him. Good luck! Make sure you bring it to your doctors attention. My 2nd son, I thought had the same thing. He had the cough, and sometime when he breathed he sounded congested. He ended up having larangomalasia, and bronchiomalasia which is where the cartilage in the airway, isn’t healed and it partially collapses when he breathes….but, he rarely spit up.
My son had this. Feeding time was painful for him. He would suck a little and then pull away and repeat this. He arched his back a lot during feeding too. it would take him a long time to finish a small amount. making breastfeeding almost impossible. he also projectile vomited almost everyday until he was put on zantac.
Those are the exact same symptoms my daughter had. I didn’t think anything of it until she had about 3 nonstop crying spells that lasted for over an hour. I actually just called the doctor and they were able to call in a prescription so i didn’t have to take her in. My daughter would only sleep flat on her back for about 15 minutes, elevated for about 45, to get her to sleep longer, i had to lay her on her belly and she slept for 5 hours the first time. It was a huge help, i have a angelcare motion detector in her crib so i don’t have to worry about her laying on her belly.
The swallowing part sounds like my baby…he’ll make a funny face, swallow and look like he’s chewing..then I’ll hear this tiny noise like "wewp", I can’t describe it.
She def sounds like she hasGERD, does she cry a lot(esp after/during feeding), need to be held upright alot (esp to calm her down)..if so, my doctor was only concerned when I told her my son was crying during the feedings. This is when she prescribed Zantac (as last resort after formula switches and other switches – holding 30 mins upright after feeding, elevating bed). My doctor said that he is getting worse if he starts coughing/choking a lot – so I recommend you see your dr straight away.
Zantac def helped with my sons crying during the day, he is still a bit "fussy" & weird during his feedings, but I think if begin to have food aversions, that it may be something that you just have to wait till they grow out of. I don’t want to give my son anything stronger medication wise unless absolutely necessary..(i.e he’s not eating!)
Good Luck
My son had reflux, he would arch his back and scream during feeds. He wasn’t sick very much though and luckily didn’t have problems lying flat it was just during his feeds. He did have hiccups all the time though. It was awful but luckily he grew out of it by about 3.5 months, it just stopped suddenly.
just to warn you though, our doctor was useless, they just told me that he’d grow out of it, eventually they prescribed us gaviscon but that didn’t work. They told us that babies weren’t given medication for reflux but when we went to visit the consultant pediatrician at the hospital he prescribed some medication there and then….. funny how they all tell you something different..
My son has silent reflux. He would hardly eat at all because it became too painful for him. Just tell your dr what’s going on with your little one and see about medication. It does sound as if your daughter has some going on and if it is left untreated it can get worse. And for your sanity and her sake you want it treated. In the mean time just keep her elevated during and after feedings. Usually about 30-45 minutes after should be plenty. Also make sure she burps really good (not that you don’t know that, but mine got so bad that he swallowed a ton of air from fussing and fighting during his feeds). If breastfeeding try to eliminate dairy and soy (if you haven’t already). If formula feeding you may need a switch. If they have food allergies it can upset reflux/gerd even more. We had to put my little guy on Alimentum and it helped quite a bit but he does still have reflux that he is being treated for.
GERD is the severe form of reflux. We struggled with this for about the 1st 7 months or so. It peaks at 4 months, which is when we ended up having my son on 2 diff meds to get him to be able to take his bottle without screaming bloody murder. All of what you describe are common symptoms. For now all you can do is elevate for at least 30 min after each feeding and have your baby sleep elevated. My son slept in his bouncy seat till he was 5 months old. Best of luck to you and if the doc does want to prescribe something, try not to get Zantac. It has alcohol in it and can cause some side effects. My son was on Axid and Prevacid.
