Heartburn is caused when you eat something and your stomach decides to produce more stomach acid. Stomach acid contains hydrochloric acid (HCl), which needs to be neutralized if you have heartburn.
Heartburn remedies which contain the bases you mentioned (Mg(OH)2 and CaCO3) react with HCl to form salts
The equation for magnesium hydroxide with stomach acid:
2HCl + Mg(OH)2 -> MgCl2 + 2H2O
hydrochloric acid + magnesium hydroxide -> magnesium chloride + water
The equation for calcium carbonate with stomach acid:
2HCl + CaCO3 -> CaCl2 + H2O + CO2
hydrochloric acid + calcium carbonate -> calcium chloride + water + carbon dioxide
The above reactions are neutralization reactions and they mean exactly that – the pH has been raised from acidic to something more neutral. The bases have got rid of the nasty HCl which was produced by your stomach and converted it to salts, water and carbon dioxide.
Hope this helps
when i have hart burn i take tums
heartburn is caused by acid reflux on the lining of the esophagus. ANTACIDS simply work to balance out this acidic secretion with mild alkalis, in the stomach where the problem starts. A number of things can cause heartburn, such as stress or spicy foods. laying down after eating can make this much, much worse as gravity is no longer "holding down" your stomach acid. Gastic Acid is mainly hydrochloric acid.
I believe that heartburn is caused by too much acidity in the stomach. The calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide are base elements. Basically, a base counteracts an acid in order to balance the stomach to a pH level that is accepted by your body. Tums, Mylanta, and Pepto work to help your heartburn feel better.
