Heartburn Gerd Causes, Symptoms & Treatments Questions
both of my daughters suffer from GERD. I highly recommend Enfamil Lipil AR its specifically for babies who "spit up" alot. It has rice mixed right in. Its only a couple dollars more expensive than regular Enfamil. But if you just want to add the rice, I recommend about two tablespoons per 8oz. Give or take a little depending on what your baby can tolerate.
I would honestly ask your pediatrician this question. To be sure you are giving the safe amount. You wouldn’t want to try something and your child develop digestive problems! Call your pediatrician or the hospitals N.I.C.U.(Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit) if they have one and give your childs weight and age and they should be able to tell you. Or you may be able to even ask your Lactation consultant. He or She may know as well.
Its about 1 teaspoon for every 2 ounces of formula however I sometimes use a little less then thins…maybe like 1.5 scoops in my daughters 4 oz bottle. Just enough to thicken it a bit.
edit: I love the people saying to get medication instead of rice cereal. I would much rather give my daughter rice cereal then medication anyday of the week. Sadly my daughter does need meds for her GERD and guess what? It gets mixed in a bottle of her formula before being fed to her or else the taste is so horrid she wont take it.
There are probably more practical ways to treat reflux in a breastfed baby. (Pumping just so you can add a little rice to it seems like a lot of hassle.) talk with the doctor about it.
before you pump and add rice cereal — have you tried block nursing? see a lactation consultant.
You shouldn’t mix rice cereal with breastmilk for such a young baby. If your baby has been diagnosed with GERD, doctors would prescribe medication.
Take a look at this link for advice on treating reflux, GERD and other issues of spitting up after feeds:

Good luck.
NEVER use rice cereal to thicken anything! Mix up a small amount of rice cereal with milk, feed to your baby with a rubber coated baby spoon and then nurse your baby.
Contrary to ‘popular’ beliefs – newborns can have rice cereal; it will NOT hurt them and they can digest it just fine (suggestion from a great honest ‘old fashioned’ doctor).
