I think that I might have GERD?
The other day I woke up with a pain in my chest, right behind the sternum. I thought it might be heartburn, because I’ve never had it before. But too many Tums and cups of Pepto Bismol later, I decided to look it up on the internet. I found GERD here: http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/g/gerd/symptoms.htm
And the following symptoms match me:
Heart Burn(Maybe, i’m not sure what this is supposed to feel like)
Belching(more than usual)
Pain in the chest
Trouble Swallowing
Tight Throat
Dry Cough(Not very frequent, but more than before)
Increased by eating, but decreased by laying down.
If it is GERD, should I see a doctor?
If not, what could it be?

It does sound like the symptoms I experienced before my doctor diagnosed me with GERD. I went through multiple doctors and specialists over the course of 3 years who persistently misdiagnosed it as Stress or Allergies or simply Heartburn before a doctor finally scoped my throat and saw what the real issue was.
I had trouble sleeping because it always felt like my throat was swelling shut — a condition that worsened when I was sick. I sometimes had trouble swallowing small objects, like M&Ms or peanuts, and I had frequent heartburn. I didn’t have much pain, but that was incidental to my condition, luckily.
You should definitely see a GI specialist. They may try you on Nexium or something like that to see if it helps, before they recommend surgery. In my case, drugs did nothing for it, so I did need surgery to correct the reflux — a lap nissen fundoplication. That was 6 years ago, and I’ve been 100% better ever since, with no complaints, pain, or problems.
don’t stress about this yet.
if it only happened the once it could be because of something very acidic that you ate however if it continues you should think about seeing your doctor it could be GERD and often it can be kept under control with medication.in the first instance. sometimes these symptoms can be caused by a hiatus hernia which can also be controlled with medication but often ends up with surgery.
think back on what you had to eat or drink the night before and that might help you to isolate what caused the problem and you could experiment with what you think it might be and try it again and if the same happens then avoid those things in the future.
good luck and monitor it for a while but if keeps occurring then consult a doctor.
