There are no studies to show that an alkaline diet is useful. Most claims are just hear-say. If you are suffering from GERD and are searching for alternative care you may want to give chiropractic a try. Some chiropractors treat this disorder with the use of certain techniques to help the stomach function correctly. I have heard that enzymes may help also but again, i know of no studies to indicate this is true.
It seems like common sense and logic. The heartburn is the result of the effect of gastric acid on your esophagus. All of the medication for GERD is directed at neutralizing or decreasing acid. You avoid acidic foods as part of your treatment. Therefore: an alkaline diet can only be good for GERD.
Don’t sue me… that said… try the following. Works for me.
Proponents of the alkaline-acid theory believe that a diet high in acid-producing foods leads to lack of energy, excessive mucous production, infections, anxiety, irritability, headache, sore throat, nasal and sinus congestion, allergic reactions and makes people prone to conditions such as arthritis and gout. Despite being an acidic solution, some proponents of apple cider vinegar believe it has an alkalinizing effect on the body, which is why one to two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in water is recommended as a daily health tonic. Although it’s a popular remedy, the effectiveness of the remedy and the theory haven’t been researched.
What does the above have to do with GERD? Well… I used to have GERD along with sinusitis, allegies, asthma. I feel great since doing the vinegar remedy. Maybe vinegar will provide the alkaline "diet" that you might need.
