Old Wives Tale? Hair and Heartburn?

A co-worker just had a baby girl born with a FULL head of hair. Another co-worker claims that hairy babies cause heartburn- the new father agreed that his wife did suffer a lot of heartburn during her pregnancy. Anyone else ever hear of this? Know any reasons why it might be true, or is this just a pregnancy fairy tale? Thanks- just curious.

I recently read that the hormone produced when your baby is growing it’s hair can cause heart burn for the mother as well, but that it doesn’t happen that way for everyone. The article concludes that the old wife tale of heartburn = hair might have an element of truth in it. However, it also states that heartburn is also often caused in pregnancy just because the growing uterus is squishing the stomach. So don’t assume that just because you have heartburn that you’re going to give birth to Chewbacca, or that your baby is going to look like Mr. Clean if you don’t have heartburn. There are too many variables for the study to have proven or disproven the old wives tale for sure.
I’ve heard of it, but it wasn’t true for me with either of my boys. They had tons of hair and I had no heartburn.
i have Never heard of this its kinda funny though maybe the baby gave them an inside rug burn ={} lol idk
It is an old wives-tail! You will hear a MILLION things like this whenever someone is pregnant. They are fun to listen to, though!
I just read this as a pregnancy myth, but who knows, there could be truth to it.
Most definitely is an old-wives tale. I suffer from constant heartburn, but it has to with the acids in your stomach so the doctor suggested I eat 5 small meals a day and stayed away from drinks that were too hot and too cold. The baby’s hair has nothing to do with why you have acid reflux. However, as the baby grows heartburn gets worse because your uterus to pushing against your stomach.
YES!!! With my first pregnancy, heartburn 24/7. She came out with more than a headfull of hair, she had so much lol. With this last pregnancy, no heartburn at all, and she was bald lol.
both my girls had lots of hair and yes i had very bad heartburn
It’s an old wives’ tale that hasn’t proven true for me or my kids. I had severe heartburn with my first two and they were mostly bald. I didn’t have it so bad with my last one, and she was decently covered with fuzzy hair.
Then again, it may be true for others and not me because we’re all a bit opposite of the norm…..LOL.
I never had heartburn but had it all the time while I was pregnant and my son was born with tons of hair.
While having one of my ultrasound, the nurse advised that there is no scientific truth to it, she found it more true than not.
For me this would have came true. I have 2 kids and the full time I lived on Tums, my kids had so much hair you could braid it!! This time I have NO heartburn so we will see if this one has hair.
I just read an article about this. It was originally believed to be an old wives tale. However, new research has shown that there is some truth to this. Although there was no medical reason as to why. I had moderate heartburn with my daughter, but nothing I thought was severe, and she had a TON of hair at birth. I’m currently 33 weeks pregnant. I’ve only had a little heartburn, so I’m anxious to see if my son will have any hair at birth.
It was true for my wife. Our 1st child had no hair and no heartburn. Our 2nd child my wife had heartburn so bad she got it from drinking water and that baby was born with so much black hair it was almost scary. My 3rd child had no hair no heartburn.
I believe this to be true. I will never forget how bad her heartburn was.
oh yeah this is an old wives tale but its far from true, with my first daughter i had NO heartburn and she was born with so much hair that i could already put it in a tiny pony tail, my second, no heartburn, lots of hair, my third SO MUCH heartburn i thought i was gonna die lol, my baby was basically bald.
I have heard of this… but i dont believe it… my daughter had a head full of black hair. and I never had heart burn..well i had it one time though out my pregancy..and when were in walmart or somewhere..alot of people will be like honey i bet you had heart burn bad..lol. but i never. but my cousin had her baby and had heart burn just the night before she went in labor and her baby had lots of hair..so i dunno. i believe its just a old wives tale.
Pregnancy Fairy Tale. Both of my kids had FULL heads of hair (literally over 1.5 inches long at birth) and I never had an ounce of heartburn. The first thing people would say when they saw them was, "You must have had HORRIBLE heartburn." I’d just smile and say no.
I have heard of that with my daughter i had no heartburn what so ever she had no hair with my son I had alot of heartburn, he has a full head of hair….
There is no logical reason for this.
The baby -including head and hair is cushioned and surrounded by amniotic fluid. It is impossible for the hair to cause heartburn.Heartburn is common in pregnancy as the enlarged uterus press on the stomach.
I had not heard this Old wives tale before.I don’t think its one we have in the UK-we certainly have enough of them
when I was pregnant with my son I had heartburn all the time when he was born he had a head full of hair lots of black hair.
Pregnancy and heartburn go hand in hand. I’ve had a few friends who had killer heartburn but bald babies. It’s just as you said, an old wives tale.
I rarely had heartburn during my pregnancy, only at the very end, but my daughter still had lots of hair. I’d say its an old wives tale.
i always thought it was an old tale but i just got the new parenting magazine and they said it is TRUE!!! because the same hormone that causes heartburn causes hair growth so they claim there is a correlation! i guess i will see soon…36 weeks with lots of heartburn
yea thats what my mom kept telling me cause i had heartburn so bad i couldnt sleep lying down!! haha and my boby boy came out damn near bald…its just because of the way the baby is positioned i believe on your stomach it pushes the acid more up lol
